OIST also known as the Okinawa Institute of Science & Technology located in Japan is inviting applications from international students currently in Bachelor/master programs or those who have graduated and are interested in pursuing PhD degree program from OIST. The research internship is offered twice a year and is highly competitive the selection is based on Academic background, Intended research, and available funds.

Internship Dates 

The Fall 2025 OIST Internship will take place at OIST Japan from October 1 – March 31, 2026.

Who can Apply?

Students and graduates meeting the following requirements are eligible to apply:

• The OIST research internship is accepting applications from all nationals
• Undergraduate students completed two years of the degree program
• Students currently enrolled in Masters degree program
• Students must have approval from the home institute
• Recent graduates interested in pursuing PhD from OIST can also apply.

OIST Internship Coverage

The internship offers all the costs related to the program includes

• Stipend: A stipend of JPY 2,400 Per day (Weekends are not included)
• Commute Allowance: Shuttle service cost is covered
• Air Travel Allowance: Round Trip Air Ticket for the program
• Accommodation: Offered in or off-campus

You will work under the direction of institute faculty, check out the availability of faculty, and project for the internship.

Required Documents

Transcript & Diploma

• Scanned copies of current academic transcript (PDF Format)
• Scanned copy of diploma who have completed their degree

Statement of Purpose

• Define how your skill set and expertise fit your desired research unit
• Students interested in multiple research units need to define their interests within one statement
• Your hopes to accomplish at OIST
• How the research internship will help you in your career plans

Recommendation Letter

• Submit at least one of three recommendation letters from the professors who know your work.
• Recommendation letters from Post Doctoral Researchers and Lab members are not eligible.
• Do mention a proper email of the recommenders in your applications, as they will be contacted to submit your recommendation.
• Recommendation letters submitted by the students will not be entertained.
• Students can only submit the application once their recommendation letters is submitted.

Passport

• Upload the scan of your passport – applicants who don’t have a passport at the time of application can submit their government issue identification – However, after selection, you have to submit a passport copy

Photo

• Applicant’s passport-size photos taken within the last three months

Application Fee

• The OIST has set an application fee of 3,000 JPY for the research internship program.
