Digital Humanism Fellowship 2026–2027 in Austria (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the Digital Humanism Fellowship 2026–2027 at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria. This fellowship is designed for PhD candidates and recent PhD graduates researching the relationship between technology and society. Selected fellows will spend three months in Vienna, from February to June 2027, conducting research and joining the IWM academic community. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of €3,300 for postdoctoral researchers and €2,750 for current PhD candidates. The program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure of the Republic of Korea. No application fee is required. Interested candidates must submit their applications by September 21, 2026.

About the Fellowship

The Digital Humanism Fellowship focuses on how technology affects people and society. The program welcomes research from diverse academic disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and other fields that examine the social, economic, and geopolitical impacts of digitalization.

What Does the Fellowship Offer?

Selected fellows will receive a monthly stipend of:

  • €3,300 per month for postdoctoral candidates
  • €2,750 per month for doctoral candidates

The stipend is expected to cover living and research expenses, including accommodation, travel, health insurance, local transportation, utilities, and research costs.

The IWM also provides office space, internet access, research facilities, and administrative support free of charge. Fellows become part of the IWM community and can participate in the Institute’s academic activities.

Who Can Apply?

  • Are currently enrolled in a doctoral program, or
  • Obtained your PhD no earlier than 21 September 2022
  • Have a research project related to Digital Humanism
  • Can submit your application in English
  • Applicants who have previously received an IWM fellowship must wait three academic years before applying again.

Required Documents

Applicants need to submit:

  • Motivation letter
  • Short project description of up to 550 characters
  • Project proposal of up to 7,500 characters
  • CV including publications
  • Two letters of recommendation

All materials must be in English. The applicant’s documents must be combined into one PDF for the online application.
