East-West Center-Graduate Degree Fellowship Overview:

Prospective international students, current international and national students (at UH Manoa), recent graduates, and professionals can apply for the fellowship to pursue master’s, doctoral, certificate, and postgraduate diploma programs at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA.

The graduate fellowship covers the cost of general tuition fees, books, accommodation in the East-West Center dormitory, and partial funding towards meals, health insurance, and incidental expenses. The fellowship offers competitive funding for field study and conference presentations.

Fellowship Duration

  • The funding is available for the duration of the respective master’s degree programs, which last 1-2 years, and the doctoral degree programs, which last 3-4 years.

Funding/ Benefits:

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides the following funding:

  • Full-time graduate tuition and fees up to the equivalent of the general tuition at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM) towards master’s and postdoctoral studies.
  • The East-West Center residence hall will provide single-occupancy housing for the awardee.
  • Awardees will receive a monthly stipend to cover food and incidental expenses, such as personal care, transportation, and entertainment.
  • There is an allowance for books, course materials, research supplies, and equipment.
  • Awardees will receive health insurance coverage, which is essential for accessing quality medical care.

Who can Apply?

Candidates from the eligible countries must meet the following criteria to be considered for fellowship:

  • The candidate must possess a 4-year bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a recognized institution abroad.
  • The last four semesters or six quarters of undergraduate coursework, as well as any post-baccalaureate work (if applicable), should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0).
  • By December 1, students must apply to UH Mānoa for the fall semester If they haven’t already.

Selection Criteria:

  • The selection process will give preference to applicants who demonstrate a genuine interest in and connection to the Asia-Pacific region.

  • A copy of the passport biodata page is required for international applicants.
  • The UH statement of objectives is exclusively intended for prospective international students.

Documents due on January 1, 2025:

  • Official Transcripts
  • Three (3) letters of reference
  • English proficiency requirements for prospective international students: IELTS (6.5), TOEFL (79), or Duolingo (95), subject to specific conditions and exemptions
