METI Japan Internship 2026 (In-person, Online) | Fully Funded

To all ambitious students and recent graduates seeking international internships, what could be better than gaining work experience at Japanese companies as an intern? The Government of Japan has something exciting to offer! Applications are invited for the METI Japan Internship 2026. A 6-week fully funded internship in Japan, offered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), allows outstanding international students and young professionals from OECD/DAC-listed countries to work in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at Japanese companies. The internships are available in a wide range of areas, and candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, such as IT, engineering, marketing, international relations, AI research, and more, can apply.

It’s a dynamic internship program by the Japanese government that offers an opportunity to gain hands-on work experience at participating Japanese host companies and to gain exposure to Japanese work and business culture. Currently, 80 Japanese companies are participating in this program, and each company will select one person. The internship offers flexible arrangements, with both in-person and online participation, making it more accessible for everyone. The METI internship aims to promote international collaboration and provide valuable insights into how Japanese companies operate. The last date for submission of applications is June 30th, 2026. Late submissions are not accepted.

Internship Period

Remote Participation

1. August 24 – September 18, 2026

In-Person Participation

Offer Two Cycles:

1. Arrival: October 7, 2026 / Departure: November 26, 2026
2. Arrival: October 7, 2026 / Departure: November 26, 2026

Internship Mode

You have two options for attending the internship

1. In-person

The in-person internship will take place in the participating host companies in Japan; you must be physically present in the office to attend the program.

2. Online Internship

You can attend the internship remotely from your home workplace under the instruction of the host company.

Who can apply for the METI Internship?

• Foreign Nationals from OECD/DAC countries
• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree program
• Applicants who have completed their bachelor’s or master’s degrees
• Applicants aged between 18 and 39 years as of August 24, 2026
• Enrollment certificate from the host institute
• Citizens of Japan are not eligible to apply

METI Internship Coverage

The coverage includes

• Visa Assistance to enter Japan
• Covers Round-Trip Air Travel Tickets
• Accommodation for the duration of the program
• A personal computer by the host company
• Physical internship stipend of 3000 yen per day
• Virtual internship stipend of 1,000 yen per day
• Internship insurance

Applications Requirements

• Applicants’ proficiency in Japanese or English.
• Certificate of enrollment from the host institute for students who are enrolled in degree programs.
• Certificate of graduation from the host institutes for students who have graduated.
• Letter of recommendation from university faculty.
• Applicants must fulfill all the requirements of each company.

Interns Role

• Engaged in various pre-training and follow-up training.
• Submit daily reports, notifications, and documents after the internship.
• Participation in a Japanese Language course.
• Develop the goals and role with the manager.
