Well, wait no more, as NIMS, also known as the National Institute for Materials Science, has announced its flagship “NIMS Internship Programme 2026” through its official portal and is seeking applications from talented and hardworking students from around the world.
The NIMS offers an incredible opportunity to undergraudate and graduate students to gain cutting-edge research experience in the fields of materials and science. The objective of the internship program is to provide students with technical experience in the field of materials science and exposure to the institute’s Joint Graduate School program. For the year 2026, NIMS will be offering 100 internships to students. The duration of the internship is 3 months, during which interns will conduct research activities under the mentorship of NIM’s faculty and engage in professional development activities such as conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Who can Apply?
Applicants meeting the following criteria can apply for the NIMS internship:
- The internship is open to both domestic and international students
- Applicants currently enrolled as full-time students in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs in material sciences or related fields such as engineering, Biology, Computer Science, physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology.
- Academic status must be a full-time student throughout the internship
- Possess excellent academic achievements
- Demonstrate interest in materials science research
- Proficiency in the English language

- Round-trip airfare coverage for bachelor’s students
- Recieve a competetive stipend of 2,560 JPY/day to cover living expenses

How to Apply for the NIMS Internship in Japan?
Applicants interested in the internship need to follow the following steps:
1. Find Host Researcher: Interested students need to find their preferred researcher on the NIMS “Samurai” Directory.
2. Contact Researcher: Once you have chosen your researcher, contact them via email and send the required documents
3. Application Review: After the submission of the application, the researcher will review your documents. If they agree to accept you as an intern, they will submit your application to the graduate program section.
