OIST Research Internship 2026 (Fall Intake) in Japan – Fully Funded

Here is an exciting opportunity just for you. The call for applications is open for the OIST Research Internship 2026, a fully funded program in Japan for international students and recent graduates from around the world. The Okinawa Institute of Science & Technology has announced its flagship “Research Internship for the Fall 2026 session” and is inviting motivated and dynamic students to apply. This internship is designed for students currently enrolled in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree or those enrolled in master’s programs at recognized institutions, colleges, universities, or vocational schools in Japan or abroad. Recent graduates are also eligible to apply.

The program is ideal for students and graduates planning to pursue a PhD at OIST. The internship lasts 3-6 months, starting in Japan from October 1st, 2026, to March 31st, 2027. During this period, participants will have the chance to conduct intensive research in a world-class environment under the guidance of distinguished OIST faculty. The internship provides extensive support, including a competitive allowance, travel expenses, accommodation, administrative assistance, and more. Applications are submitted online through the official OIST portal. Eligiblity Criteria

  • Accepting applications from both foreign and Japanese nationals
  • Applicants currenlty enrolled in the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program or have recently graduated in STEM fields from a recognized institution in Japan or overseas.
  • Bachelor’s students must have completed at least 2 academic years of the degree program
  • Enrolled students must get a participation approval from their home institute
  • Students or graduates interested in pursuing their PhD from OIST are highly encouraged to apply

Internship Coverage

The research interns are offered the following financial support:

  • A competetive allowance of 2,400 JPY per working day
  • Transportation support, such as a shuttle bus pass
  • Administrative support
  • Round-trip air ticket to/from Japan
