United Nations Division of Ocean Affairs and the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs are inviting applications for the UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship for the session 2025. The UNNF Fellowship is specifically designed for Mid-level government officials and Mid-level professionals belonging to developing countries. Applicants dealing directly with Ocean affairs and the law of the sea are highly encouraged to apply for this fully funded fellowship program.
It’s a 9 months fellowship program that is structured in two phases! (Phase 1) participants will get 3 months of training with OLA/DOALOS at the United Nations headquarters located in New York, United States (Phase 2) participants will have 3 months research stay at any participating host institute.
During the fellowship program, fellows will receive advanced training in Ocean affairs and the law of the sea and will acquire natural skills to support their states by implementing the legal framework. For the session 2025 a total no of 14 UNNF fellowships will be awarded and until now 200 individuals have been successfully trained through this program you can also be a part of them. Fellowship Duration & Location
- The duration of the fellowship is 9 months during which you will spend 3 months in New York, USA, and another 6 months in the host institutes in the USA, Australia, Canada, Asia, and Europe.
Fellowship Structure
- Phase 1: 3 months training phase in Daolas at United Nations Headquarters, New York (From Mid-March to June 2025)
- Phase 2: 6 Months research stay at the host institute (July to December 2025)
Who can Apply?
To be eligible for the United Nations Nippon Foundation fellowship you need fulfill the following criteria:

- Age requirement 25-40 years old
- Must possess a first university degree or equivalent

Financial Coverage
The fellowship is fully funded by the United Nations and offers the following coverage:
- Stipend: Applicants will be provided with the monthly stipend during the complete 9 months of the program
- Transportation: Local transportation costs during the program are covered
- Air Travel: Round economy class air travel tickets for the fellows
- Insurance: Medical insurance throughout your stay
- Accommodation: Accommodation is covered throughout the fellowship
- Stationary: An amount of $100 for the book allowance
