You heard it right, The Division for Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, has announced the call for applications for its flagship “UNNF Foundation Strategic Needs Fellowship 2026.” It’s an intensive 4-month training program scheduled to take place from September to mid-December 2026 at DOALOS/OLA, located at the UN Headquarters in New York. The division’s renowned experts develop the course, which consists of hands-on training sessions, scenario-based exercises, workshops, and group discussions led by UN staff and experts.
The United Nations is inviting applications from government officials from developing countries holding a minimum first-level university degree and currently in a position relevant to ocean affairs and the law of the sea with limited background in the field. This is a fully funded fellowship program; the fellows will receive a competitive monthly stipend, medical insurance, and round-trip airfare coverage. The application process is online via the official UN portal. The last date for submitting applications is March 22nd, 2026; late or incomplete applications will not be considered. UNNF Strategic Needs Fellowship Objective
The objective of the UNNF fellowship programme is to assist developing countries, specifically small island countries, least developed countries, and landlocked developing countries, in addressing the important issues related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea.

Financial Coverage
A fully funded fellowship program that offers the following support:

Eligiblity Criteria:

- An individual’s age must be between 25 and 45 years at the time of application
- Must have completed a first-level university degree from a recognized institute
- Have excellent command in English language, both spoken and written
- Commit to full-time participation during the fellowship dates
