Japanese JSPS Research Fellowship 2027-28 (Fully Funded)

Applications are open for the Japanese JSPS Research Fellowship 2027-28. This prestigious international fellowship program, organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in cooperation with the ASEAN University Network (AUN), offers an excellent opportunity for early-career, pre- and postdoctoral researchers from eligible ASEAN countries to spend 1-12 months in Japan and conduct research at leading research institutes. The fellowship is open to researchers across all fields. Selected fellows will receive airfare coverage, a monthly stipend, an overseas travel allowance, and other benefits.

About JSPS Research Fellowship 2027

It’s a fully funded fellowship program in Japan, designed for talented researchers from eligible ASEAN countries to take their research beyond their home country and conduct research with a host in Japan. During the fellowship, selected fellows will conduct collaborative research under the supervision of the host researcher.

The objective of the JSPS fellowship program is to foster research cooperation and promote internationalization in Japan.

Fellowship Coverage

The JSPS fellowship offers comprehensive support; the coverage includes:

  • Airfare: Round-trip air ticket
  • Maintenance Allowance: Up to JPY 362,000 per month
  • Miscellaneous: Settling-in Allowance of JPY 200,000
  • Research Support: Up to JPY 70,000 per month
  • Overseas Travel Insurance

Who can Apply?

  • Candidates must have earned their doctoral degrees within the past six years.
  • Candidates enrolled in a doctoral program and expected to graduate within 2 years.
  • Not previously awarded the JSPS fellowship in Japan.
  • Japanese citizens are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have an excellent academic record and achievements.

Eligible Countries:

Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar,  Thailand, Viet Nam, and The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

Required Documents:

Applicants need to have the following documents for the online application:

  • Academic Transcripts: Bachelor’s degree through the most recent degree you have earned.
  • A PhD diploma or certificate.
  • A recommendation letter from your institute’s employer.
  • A letter from the Japanese host researchers agreeing to supervise your research.
  • A research plan covering your background, purpose, and impact.
  • List of publications.

How to Apply for JSPS Fellowship in Japan 2026?

The application process is online through an overseas nominating authority. Before submitting the application, you need to:

  1. Identify a research area
  2. Contact a host researcher in Japan
  3. Discuss your proposed research with the host
  4. Prepare the research plan
  5. Submit your application along with the required documents

Finding a host researcher is an important part of the application; interested applicants must identify a suitable researcher in Japan willing to host during the fellowship. The host must be affiliated with the eligible research institute and meet the fellowship requirements.
