The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, one of the UN specialized agencies that supports humanitarian and development aid to mothers and children worldwide, has announced an application call for its “UNICEF Thought Leadership Internship 2026”. It’s a full-time paid internship program at the Global Programme Division, the Director’s office, New York Hq offered to talented students enrolled in a university degree or who have recently graduated in areas related to business, economics, social sciences, political science, international development, or related fields.

The Thought Leadership internship offers students an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and gain hands-on experience in strategic communication and executive office support. The internship lasts 3 months, with an expected start date in June 2026. The internship offers flexible work arrangements, offering both in-person on-site in Newtork and remote participation. The selected participants will receive a competitive monthly stipend, a one-time allowance to cover travel and visa-related costs. Who can Apply?

To apply for the UNICEF Thought internship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application
  • Academic status: Enrolled in a university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD program)
  • Applicants who graduated within the last two years are also welcome to apply
  • Academic Background: Pursuing their degree or graduated in the fields of Economics, Social sciences, Political sciences, Communication, International development, or related disciplines
  • Demonstrate excellent academic achievement and motivation
  • Profiency in the English language
  • Knowledge of any other UNICEF official language would be an assett
  • Profiency in Microsoft Office tools

Competencies

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong project management and organization skills
  • Can work independently in multiculture work environment
  • Experience in research, strategy, and consulting is a plus

Interns Role

The selected participants will be working within the office of the Global Programme Division (GPD) in the following two core areas:

Programme Thought Leadership
  • Assist with staff working papers, such as formatting publications and developing an analytical platform
  • Assist with journals and field notes
  • Organize staff book clubs and learning sessions
Strategic Engagement & Communications
  • Assist with the director’s external engagement by managing LinkedIn
  • Manage communication between internal staff and external partners
  • Outreach via communication channels such as Instagram or WhatsApp
