Applications are invited for the University of Hawaii ADB Japan Scholarship 2027 for the fall intake. Funded by the Government of Japan through the Asian Development Bank and managed by the East-West Center, the ADB-JSP scholarship offers an excellent opportunity for talented students from eligible developing ADB member countries to pursue a master’s in development-related fields at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), USA, and to participate in the residential education and leadership development program at the East-West Center. The program aims to support talented students in pursuing graduate studies at leading institutions and to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the development of their home countries. About ADB Japan Scholarship 

ADB Japan is one of the prestigious and highly competitive programs, supported by the Government of Japan. The program allows talented students from eligible ADB member countries to pursue full-time postgraduate education in development-related fields. The scholarship is not limited to institutions in Japan; it offers scholarships across the Asia-Pacific region. The East-West Center at the University of Hawaiʻi in the United States is among them.

The program aims to equip scholars with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Scholarship Duration

The ADB-JSP scholarship is awarded for one year with the possibility of extension to the second year depending on the applicant’s satisfactory performance. The maximum scholarship duration for a master’s degree is two years.

Scholarship Coverage

Selected scholars will receive the following support;

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Monthly subsistence allowance
  • Housing Allowance
  • Books and instructional materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel expenses
  • Possible thesis preparation support for eligible research students
  • Possible support for preparatory language, computer literacy and similar courses in special circumstances

Who can Apply?

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Be a citizen of an eligible ADB borrowing member country or a
  • Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate excellent academic achievement.
  • Have at least 2 years of full-time professional work experience.
  • Have sufficient English proficiency for graduate-level study.
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
  • Have admission to an approved master’s program at a participating institution.
  • Agree to return to their home country after completing the scholarship.
  • Not already be enrolled in a graduate degree program.
  • Not be living or working in a country other than their home country.

Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan,  Kyrgyz Republic, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue,  New Guinea,  Vanuatu and Viet Nam.

How to Apply for the University of Hawaii ADB Japan Scholarship 2027?

There is no separate application for the ADB; interested students must apply through one of the participating institutes. Visit the official link below, check the eligible graduate programs, review the admission requirements of the institute, prepare your documents, apply for admission, and indicate that you want to be considered for the ADB JSP scholarship. Submit your application. The institute will then shortlist students and nominate them to ADB.
