To all the aspiring creators out there, we are here with an exciting, international creator residency program in Japan that is meant for you. Tokyo Arts & Space (TOKAS) is pleased to announce the call for applications for its flagship “TOKAS Residency Programme 2027-28”. This fully funded international creator residency program is organized by TOKAS and implemented through the division of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The residency program is aimed at talented international creators working in a wide range of creative fields. There are no country restrictions; creators from all across the world are invited to submit their applications.
The TOKAS residency program allows participants to stay, engage, and conduct research in Tokyo while immersing themselves in a rich culture. TOKAS is currently accepting applications for three residency programs: 1) International creator residency program, 2) Curator Residency program, and 3) Research Residency Program. Each residency has a different timeline and eligibility criteria, which we will discuss later in this post. No application fee is required to apply – the program covers all the costs of selected participants, including airfare, living expenses, and more. Check out more details below.

TOKAS International Residencies Programmes
International Creator Residency Programme
The creator residency programme is aimed at highly motivated international creators working in the fields of design, architecture, and visual arts to work in Tokyo, Japan. Applicants selected under this residency programme will recieve airfare, living expenses, creative work fee, and accommodation.

- Workspace: shared
Who can Apply?
- Open to all nationalities
- No age restrictions
- Previously did not participate in the creator residency program
- Students are not eligible to apply
- Working in the fields of Architecture, design, and visual arts
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in the desired field
- Excellent English communication skills
2. Curator Residency Programme 2027
The Curator residency programme is aimed at talented curators from across the world working in the fields of cultural research, art criticism, and curation. The curator programme allows artists to conduct research and present their ideas.
The selected curators will receive comprehensive support covering airfare, research fee, and accommodation

- Duration: 1-3 Months
- Seats: 6
Who can Apply?
- Open for all nationals
- Professionals working in the fields of cultural research, curatio, and art criticism
- Possess a minimum of 3 years of work experience in the desired fields
- Strong command of the English language
- No Age limit
- Students enrolled in degree programs are not eligible to apply
3. Research Residency Programme
The TOKAS Research residency programme offers creators an opportunity to research arts and culture in the city of Tokyo. The program is open for both international and local creators working in a wide range of fields.
Overview:
- Duration: 6-12 Weeks
- Support: Accommodation only
- No of seats: 5
Eligiblity:
- Open to both international and local curators
- Minimum 5 years of professional work experience in your specialized field
- Demonstrate research interest centered on Tokyo
- Undergraduate Master’s students are not eligible
- Working in the fields of visual arts, design, performing arts, art criticism, cultural writing, and research
- No age restrictions

The Residences run in 3 cycles each year:
