The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), one of the autonomous institutes within the United Nations that works on research on disarmament and international security issues, announces its flagship annual Outer Space Security Conference 2026, scheduled to take place from September 8-9, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland, and online. This year, UNIDIR has partnered with the Center for International Governance Innovation and has launched the Youth Video Competition. The competition is designed to engage young leaders in the global dialogue. The winners of the competition will have the opportunity to attend the Outer Space Security Conference in person in Geneva. About Outer Space Security Conference 2026

It’s a flagship UNIDIR event that brings together young leaders, diplomats, technical experts, private-sector leaders, researchers, military officials, and academics to explore the evolving landscape of space security and shape responses to the associated challenges. The event is scheduled to take place on September 8-9, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

About Youth Video Competition

The video competition allows young leaders and space stewards from around the world to contribute to the annual global dialogue. The winners of the competition will have the opportunity to attend the event in person in Geneva, with all their expenses covered. Outer Space Security Conference Youth Video Competition aims to:

  • Promote dialogue on global space security issues
  • Showcase your talent and perspectives for the future of space security
  • Enable the next generation of future leaders to shape the space governance

Who can Apply?

Candidates meeting the following criteria are invitied to apply for the competition:

  • Calling applications from all nationalities
  • Individuals aged 18-25 years can apply
  • Must submit original content created by the entrant
  • Generative AI must not be used for core video narrative

Competition Theme

The theme of the competition is “Innovation for Secure and Sustainable Space Systems”

Participants are required to submit a 1-3 minute original video on the theme showcasing their research on how innovations in space architecture and technology help shape outer space as a secure and sustainable environment. In the video, you must assess the solutions to emerging threats to space operations.

Video Requirements

  • Video length: 1-3 minutes
  • Format:.mp4
  • Can be submitted in any language, but must include English captions
  • Copyrighted materials will not be entertained
  • Include visuals, audio, and subtitles in a single file

  • Presentation quality
  • Clarity of your message
  • Relevance to the competition theme
  • Orginality & creativity
  • Technical understanding
