FRIAS Fellowship Programmes 2027-28 in Germany – Fully Funded

Applications are open for the FRIAS Fellowship Programmes 2027-28. A fully funded fellowship programme in Germany hosted by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg. The fellowship provides researchers with dedicated time to focus on their research projects while joining an international community of scholars. The FRIAS Fellowship welcomes applications from researchers from all nationalities and academic backgrounds. 

The institute is offering three fellowship tracks for the 2027-28 session: Early Career Fellowships, Senior Fellowships, and the Sustainable Governance Fellowship Programme for Researchers from Africa. The fellowship duration is 3-6 months, depending on the fellowship you choose. About FRIAS Fellowship Programme

Fellowship Categories

The institute is offering three fellowship categories for the academic year 2027-28, which are:

1. FRIAS Early Career Fellowship

  • Intended for researchers who completed their PhD within the last eight years.
  • Fellowship duration: 4–10 months.
  • Open to applicants from all academic disciplines.

2. FRIAS Senior Fellowship

  • Intended for established researchers with at least eight years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Fellowship duration: 3–8 months.
  • Open to all academic disciplines.

3. Sustainable Governance Fellowship for Researchers from Africa

  • Available to researchers based at African institutions.
  • Focuses on Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Fellowship duration: 6 months

Fellowships Eligiblity Criteria

Early Career Fellowship

  • Hold a completed PhD.
  • Have completed the PhD within the last eight years.
  • Possess at least six months of research or study experience at an academic institution outside the country

Senior Fellowship

  • Hold a completed PhD.
  • Have at least eight years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Have at least six months of international research or study experience

Sustainable Governance Fellowship

  • Meet the requirements of the FRIAS senior fellowship.
  • Intended for researchers based at academic institutions in Africa.
  • Interested in conducting research in the humanities or social sciences.
