To all the creators out there, we are here with an exciting international residency program taking place in Tokyo, Japan, that you should not miss out on. Applications are invited to apply for the TOKAS International Residency Programme 2026-27. A fully funded program in Japan hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is calling for applications from international creators working in various creative fields to apply and have an opportunity to stay, engage in creation, and conduct research in Tokyo.
Currently, the applications are being accepted for the three residency programmes: (1) Curator Residency Program, (2) International Creator Residency Program (3) Research Residency Program. The duration, eligibility criteria, and period for each programme are different, which we will mention in this post. The residency program offers comprehensive financial support, covering all the costs related to the program, including Airfare, living expenses, shared living, research allowance, and much more.

Let’s discuss the Residency programmes in detail
1) International Creator Residency Programme 2026
The international creator residency program is offered to highly motivated international creators in the fields of design, Architecture, film, and visual art to provide them opportunities to work in Japan. The duration of the program is residency under this programme is 3 month.
Coverage:
The creator residence program offers:
- Shared Living space
- Airfare coverage
- A living allowance of (4,200 JPY/day)
- An allowance of (300,000 JPY) for creative work and a project
Eligibility Criteria
- Accepting applications from international creators residing outside Japan
- Creators with possess at least 5 years of experience in the specified area
- Have good English communication skills
- Students pursuing their studies are not eligible (except PhD students)
- Dual applications are accepted if one creator resides outside Japan
2) Curator Residency Program 2026
The curator residency program is offered to highly motivated individuals in the fields related to art criticism, curation, and cultural research to carry out research in Tokyo. The duration of the programme is 1-3 months.
Coverage:
- Airfare coverage
- Living space for the program duration
- An allowance of 100,000 JPY for the research project
Eligibility Criteria:
- Calling applications from international creators
- Possesses 3 or more years of work experience in a specialized area
- Have good English communication skills
- Dual applications are not accepted
3) Research Residency Programme 2026
The research residency programme is being offered to both local and international creators in the fields of film, design, music, sound art, performing art and curation, visual art, and architecture. The program offers an opportunity to highly distinguished applicants to carry out research on arts and culture in Tokyo, Japan. The duration of the residency is 6-12 weeks.
